It's drawn-out and some of the effects such as the Quark costumes and that Flash Gordon-style travel capsule are really bad. How does Cully's craft move like that? Why take a craft like that when there are travel capsules that go to the Island anyway? Why would the capsules have a setting for the island except for the students? It's not all bad. Rago and Toba just ooze evil, and their shouting match in Episode 4 is wonderful to watch, as are Troughton's expressions when faced with the gun and when he's working on the intelligence tests. Is it just me or does it look like Tolata is flirting with Jamie in a few scenes? Also, how did they find that shelter and why didn't any of the Quarks or Dominators see it - they seem to be a few feet away from the shelter's entrance. One thing I noticed is that there is lots of noise in the filmprints. My copy was from the story's first US showing (it's in hi-fi though) rather than a BBC Video. Is everyone's version like that? I'm just glad it wasn't a six-parter, or it would've been ever more drawn-out. The performances of the regulars are about the only things worth watching in the story. Barry Newbery's sets are quite good though, especially the inside of the saucer, considering the pittance he probably had to work with, and Morris Barry does a fairly good job with the forced perspective shots, though not as good a job as he did in Tomb. The landing of the Dominators' craft looks pretty good, though sometimes the doors inside are silent. Maybe Brian Hodgson was asleep? I don't. For me it remains an enjoyable story. Oh sure, it has its weak points and few strong points, but overall I just find it a pleasure to watch. For me, its strengths are in the way the Dominators assume such superiority over the Dulcians that they don't even begin to think they're in any sort of trouble from resistance...even after resistance has begun! The bickering between the two Dominators is amusing too...one of them is clearly the leader, yet since their race is the most superior race in the universe, the arrogance of both brings them to constant odds. It's almost a bureaucratic satire. Patrick Troughton is simply wonderful in this story, when he's pretending to be simple... "We don't like them much, they tell us what to do." Zoe doesn't get to do much here other than pull her dress strap back over her shoulder every five minutes. Finally my favourite aspect of this one is the solution to the problem: I love its simplicity! The Dominators have been drilling for a long time, and when they finally drop the bomb, they have no idea someone is down there to catch it! And then, of course, it's obvious what they need to do with the bomb when they have it. Perfect and satisfying. :) On the negative side, the Dulcians are dorks and have awful, awful fashion sense. The Quarks are a waste of time...they look cool, but you can't understand a word they say, and their way of "recharging" is silly...when they make a laptop you can recharge by opening and closing the cover I'll be thrilled! Also, like I said, Zoe doesn't get to do much, but Jamie has some fun.
