Any comments on it? I watched it just last month myself, because I had just been to Portmeirion where part of it was shot and I wanted to see the scenery again. (Want to see some of my honeymoon pictures, go to http://shill.simplenet.com/wed/snaps.htm). At any rate, I don't have much to say about this one - it is one of my favorites although I do generally get tired of frequent "weird cult" storylines on the show. What really makes this one work is the set design, costume design, and the general Masterpiece Theatre-like air about the episodes. I realise the costumes were probably borrowed from some other production (anyone know? my ref books aren't handy) but it sure makes for a sumptuous production. And of course the terrific location scenery helps too. :) This coming weekend's GV is FOUR TO DOOMSDAY. There's already a bit of an explanation on the web page at http://shill.simplenet.com/dw/gv.htm but I'll give an explanation here later as well. -shill -- [][] [][] Steve Hill, Network Communications Specialist, 847-925-6273 [] [] [] Harper College, 1200 W Algonquin Rd, Palatine IL 60067-7398 http://shill.simplenet.com Harper College: [] [] [] shill@harper.cc.il.us www.harper.cc.il.us [][] [][] Do you have an old Beta VCR you want to sell? That's correct. It's not on a particular channel -- we're operating out of our own video collections as a general rule. Obviously, since we've got members all around the planet, basing our choices on any one particular station wouldn't work to well... [that said, I wouldn't mind if someone planned ahead and selected a choice either based on what is just released or what is currently on a station somewhere... Obviously our upcoming State of Decay viewing matches up with the upcoming video release. I don't have Steve's URL -- I'm sure he'll post it again -- but there is a link to it on my Doctor Who site [http://www.execpc.com/~michaell/who ] under out going links. BTW, I saw a copy of the E-Space trilogy box "behind the desk" at a local video store -- it looks very good. Interestingly [for the US] it's using the McGann logo -- and not the diamond one. I wonder if this is a start of a trend. [It wouldn't surprise me -- especially if we start getting the books by the same time the next "real" US video release.] Michael Lee http://www.execpc.com/~michaell From drwho-l-owner-shill=harper.cc.il.us@lists.pipex.com Tue Oct 21 10:06:24 1997 Received: from firewall.harper.cc.il.us by info1.harper.cc.il.us (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/4.03) id AA23471; Tue, 21 Oct 1997 10:06:09 -0500 Received: from solpipe.pipex.net by harper.cc.il.us (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA12962; Tue, 21 Oct 97 10:06:05 CDT Errors-To: admin-drwho-l@lists.pipex.com Received: (qmail 27568 invoked by uid 5378); 21 Oct 1997 15:03:47 -0000 Date: 21 Oct 1997 15:03:47 -0000 Message-Id: <199710211454.HAA26633@mailtod-2.alma.webtv.net> Errors-To: admin-drwho-l@lists.pipex.com Reply-To: drwho-l@lists.pipex.com Originator: drwho-l@lists.pipex.com Sender: drwho-l@lists.pipex.com Precedence: bulk From: chrisk@webtv.net (Chris Krisocki) To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: GV: The Masque of Mandragora X-Listprocessor-Version: 6.0c -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas X-Comment: The Dr Who Mailing List Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT Mime-Version: 1.0 (WebTV) X-Status: Status: RO I actually finished watching this Sunday night around 7:30, but I've been rather lazy lately :) Anyway, this is perhaps the best of what DWM calls the pseudo-historical. All of the sets are completely convincing, and they are well lit so that one never gets the feeling that what one is watching is set in a television studio. Even the catacomb sets look good. Also notice that practically every floor has patterned tiles on it. When I first saw this story back in my Howard de Silva years, I didn't care for it all that much, probably since those under 10 years of age don't care for history and boring stuff like that :) However, seeing it again recently for the first time in far too long I was struck by how much care and attention were lavished on the production. Captain Rossini seems rather a wooden character, and of course we've got those two Cockney guards, one of whom is named "Joe Viney", which goes to show you that not everything about the story is perfect, though Norman Jones's acting and the interaction between the Doctor and Sarah more than make up for it. (She messes up saying the alphabet backwards, though : "W, U, V, T".) By the way, doesn't Sarah look smashing in her Renaissance outfit near the end? Though where the musicians are who provide the music for the masque will probably remain one of life's mysteries. Speaking of music, Dudley Simpson's score is so good I'd rush out and buy it on CD if it were available. Next week, King Frog arrives on GV. Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun. I've been reading through several old digests, and its taken me a while to get back up to speed. I love the GV idea, so here's my first post. I know this is a bit late, but I haven't seen many posts about this weeks serial yet. This will be post one of four. (one for each ep.) Episode 1: Not much is going on at the start. The Doctor and Sara provide about 5 minutes worth of 'filler' time to introduce the 'secondary console room' or 'the old one' as Tom says later in the episode. What is nice about this part is that it at least sets up one line when their in the Mandragoran Helix. The Doctor says something like "its bigger than my boot cubbard". The set for the Mandragoran Helix is pretty shoddy, IMO, but the TARDIS looks excellent here. Also, the special effect for the 'Helix energy' works pretty good, both here and throughout the rest of the serial. Up to this point the episode has been fairly boring and not much going on -- just background and filler (mostly filler, I think). Then, the Doctor and Sara arrive in 15th century earth. Here's where the story gets interesting. First, the location work is excellent. And the costumes are equally good. Doctor Who and the BBC have always had good 'costume dramas' and that's what we see here. My only complaint is that the indoor settings are obviously on a 'set'. This was a problem for many Who stories. We look out windows to see a painting or colored lights. Maybe they shouldn't have positioned the shots to take place in front of the windows. Oh, but this is a minor gripe. Overall, the acting is decent in this first episode, but it plodds along throughout its 25 minutes. The first really exciting things happens towards the end of the episode as it looks like the Doctor is about to lose his head! One more thing. I also really enjoyed the Doctor's debate with the seer (can't remember his name). This is classic TB. Also, the incidental music is good, and it fits well into the story. Although, the music is fairly typical for this period of DW. Look for more to come.... Shon Hargis P.S. Chuck, thanks for fixing my e-mail address problem. I always love when the Doctor gets out of tight squeezes in this way. Again, great costumes and generally good acting. That is, except for the Duke's uncle and his top soldier (can't remember his name, but another list subscriber refered to his acting as 'wooden'). I'd have to say that both of these caracters are wooden. This episode suffers from many of the same problems as the first: the story just moves too slowly. ep. 3: Things start getting a bit more interesting. The action picks up for the first time in this serial. Interesting that Sara is hypnotised into trying to kill the Doctor here (how many times was this plot element used in series history?). She comes off a bit silly, but its fun to watch. This is also used to explain why the Doctor and his companions can always understand whoever they come into contact with. It's funny that this doesn't always hold true in all the Doctor's adventures -- such as Talons of Weng Chiang. I guess even the Doctor still needs to know other languages. The caracter of the Duke's uncle finally warms up, ironically, right before his murder. Backing up a bit in the story. The effects used to make walls appear in the temple towards the beginning of this episode work very well. My only question is, why did the Helix Energy let the Doctor leave at all? I guess it wasn't through with him yet. Well that's all for now. Coming tomorrow: ep. 4. IMHO, of course. In fact, all the stuff that happens in this episode could have better filled two episodes. My question here is why did it take so long for anything to really happen in this story. This story had so much potential -- great location shots, excellent costumes and sets, and, for the most part, good acting. Yet, it falls flat in the end. It is only this episode that redeems this serial for me. I love it when the doctor risks his life to overcome evil. I've always been confused, though, how the Doctor appears to be Hyronimous (sp.?) and even to be enpowered by the Helix energy, eventually destroying the brethren. Evidently, he drains Hyronimous of power using the wire and the coat of armor. But, how does he appear to be controlled by the Helix energy? Any theories out there? Also, does anyone know if that is really Tom speaking when he's impersonating Hyronimous? It doesn't really sound like him, even when he has the mask off and imitates Hyronimous' voice. Although I like MoM, it is not one of my top DW stories. It just plods along way too much. If they had removed some of the filler material and used some of the ideas from ep. 4 earlier in the story, it might have helped the pacing. Also, I think it would have helped to better explain how the Doctor appeared to be consumed with Mandragora. Did many other people participate in this weeks GV? I haven't seen many posts this week. Let's keep these threads alive, I really enjoy these discussions. I also enjoy discussions on the books, but unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to read as many of those. Cheers!
