I don't find it half so bad as everyone else, such as those all-powerful Uberfans, seem to think. Even though the compilation is 2:17, it didn't seem to take that long, even if those unconvincing "village" shots were obvious padding that could have easily been left out. A few flubs: the door on which "police telephone free for use of public" is written is open in the first TARDIS scene, there's a very obvious microphone fully visible in the last shot in the arboretum before the power goes out, and just where does Ky get that cape with those feathers on it from? The cave scenes are visually stunning. These past few months I've visited three caves located in Pennsylvania and I found myself studying the Solonian cave walls and spotting the different types of formations. One thing I was told is that just one touch by human hands on a cave's surface may stop mineral deposits from growing for several thousand years. Think how many thousands of years were destroyed by the production team drawing those symbols on the walls and setting off those explosives. (If anyone here ever visits Hershey, PA, be sure to see the nearby cavern - it'll take your breath away.) One thing I noticed is that the silver trim on the uniforms flared, almost constanly, red and green, but only in Episode One. Why does the picture make a noticeable shift at the juncture between the first two episodes? Believe it or not, I can tell by the slightly lower picture quality that the first two are NTSC-sourced, even though I watched them on an NTSC television! Why does it seem as though Cotton is reading off cue-cards? He's also like this in the Blake's 7 he did nine years later. Is that Jon Pertwee doing the voices from Hyperion? Anyone else notice that Terry Walsh plays the guard that Ky knocks out in Episode One as well as the guard that Varan knocks out in Episode Four? The Mutt costumes are still impressive, apart from the non-moving eyes. They really do look organic, and the silhouettes of them in the caves are suitably horrific. One thing that I liked was that not all the roles are obviously British, such as Cotton, Sondergaard and the non-speaking Oriental near the end. All too often the series tends to forget that there are people living in areas outside the UK! Quite a decent story with a highly imaginitive premise, one which Brian Aldiss would use to great effect in his Helliconia books, and certainly worth more than the 3/10 that David J. Howe gives it in the Handbook. Sadly I don't think we will be seeing much of this again, not with the new generation's Power-Rangers-based attention spans! it's really quite an impressive plot, and like you I think the idea of having Solos with it's centuries long seasons a great one. The Mutant costumes are very impressive indeed. Although it makes one wonder what the final super-being form thinks of de-evolving back down - or maybe, like butterflies, they leave the next generation behind... It's one of the few stories I was hoping one of the MA authors would do as a sequel. The only thing that has me in shrieks of laughter is the opening scene (the one with the old bloke being hunted) as it's almost identical with the opening title of Monty Python!
