On the one hand, we've got some pretty imaginative sets, though on the other we've got some appalling one-liners and terrible performances. The idea to use the Greek myths as a source for a story is, IMHO, a good one, though the ending would've been better had the business with the white ship been left out. The way I look at it, it actually does have a decent script, the rationalization of the changing walls is rather clever, but Tom Baker's and Graham Crowden's acting ruin it for me. Doesn't it look like Tom Baker smacks Teka's behind? If you've got a compilation, it happens around the one-hour mark, or about 12 minutes into part three I would guess. I noticed that one of the actors (actresses?) playing the Nimon is Peppi Borza, who would later portray a Vervoid. The actor who played the co-pilot had earlier been in The Dominators, next week's GV. Life's full of little co-incidences, isn't it? Why i choose it? Well, it's one of the six stories i actually have! and you've already done 2 of them, so i choose this one as it one of the Tom/Lalla stories which seems to go for comedic effect and go over the top alot so i thought that might provoke some discussion. I also like this one as the main impression it left me with on it's first veiwing is one of Romana taking charge of things more than usual. Lets see what else i liked.....the sets are superb i think, on the ship and on the planet adn i love the idea of the walls being a circuit which switches. Therefore it's pity that some of the model work isn't too brilliant. I also love the costumes, especially Romana's and the Chief guards. The Nimon costume i'm not too sure about though as they give the impression of being bulky and powerful and then have tiny looking arms sticking out adn kinda wobble when they walk.....i assume because of the weight of the costume. The script.....well, i have mixed feelings about this, there are some wonderful moments for me such as the sonic screwdriver swapping and Romana getting angry at the pilot, but other bits grate rather such as "weakling scum" being the only line the pilot seem to know to say to the sacrifices adn Tom going over the top in the first console room scenes: to start with it's funny and then it gets a bit boring when it goes on for a few monents too long. I did find that the whole story lacked suspense in places, though i did like the bit where Romana gets transported to the previous Nimon world. Overall, i enjoy this story as it has some wonderful moments and the story as a whole is quite intersting, but as usual some bits could probably have done with a little tightening up and i just won't even try and understand the technobabble/theory behind created black hole and posiotronic (sp?) circuits. The basic story IMHO is good, the idea of a race bleeding a world dry then moving on is a good one, but once again (for this season) little things let it down, the Nimon costumes, and the rather poor gang of adolescence who cringe around the set. I think this is the reason i love the guard uniform, it's soooooo totally impractical!! I mean those wings on the helmet and the puffy out sleeves.....i suppose you could argue that this is a product of the fact that their great empire hasn't actually fought any wars ect for about a hundred years so they've all sat around and designed themselves more ridiculous costumes :-) Well, the Skonnans don't just loll they sit around and listen to "It is I, Soldeeeeed" make speeches all day! :-) Or perhaps the female Skonnans got fed up with them lolling around at home and said right bugger off to the power complex and listen to speeches so you don't get under my feet all day. I too particularly liked the idea of the Maze actually being a giant circuit with moving walls. John Bailey puts in a creditable performance as Sezom (the last survivor on the last planet visited by the Nimon). Not only that, but if you can regard it as panto (which it was, and was originaly transmitted over Christmas) it can be quite enjoyable. I've watched it several times and Graham Crowden's wildly over the top Soldeed usually causes me to chuckle a bit ("building a black hole...on my doorstep... [cue rolling eyes]). As does the Doctor when he finds himself in front of a crowd "Gentlemen, I stand before you, desperate to find the exit". *However*, it was obvious that the programme couldn't go on like this. Tom Baker had been given far too free a hand with the Doctor's character and reduced it to farce. The Anethans were pathetic, as was the Skonnon pilot. And, of course, there were the Nimon tottering about on high heels in black tights. The whole story line is an aboslutely blatant rip off of the classic Minotaur tale of course.... It's a matter of debate as to whether the bull-masks were bad costume, or whether they were intended to look that way, with the Nimon wearing masks for some reason. It was fun to watch it again and notice that he wasn't the only one. It was actually supposed to be regarded as panto, Richard? That definitely adds another layer to the story-- thanks for that bit of background! I thought it wonderful how the designers managed to suggest that this was an Empire in its dwindling days just from the wildly impractical outfits people wore, hmm, at least Gallifreyan guards' aren't too bad in comparison... People too overreliant on computers (so they have enough time to waste going to the hold and shouting 'weakling scum'), people who can no longer repair the equipment they use, and a scientist (Soldeed) who can't even repair K9, but a guard can--all neat ways of depicting a culture about to fall. And all they need is a parastic race waiting to move in.. Despite the poor people tottering about on platform shoes and the badly designed (or whatever) masks, the idea of a race of 'locusts' traveling through so many planets is fascinating. And I also agree with Richard, Soldeed's counterpart on Krinos is well portrayed. And I like all the mythological touches--the reason for the labyrith, the fact that it wasn't until a semibright person joined the sacrifices that things began to change (I'm going to ignore the ship comment--could have sworn the ship was white to begin with). So, it was a fun story to view again. Thanks for suggesting it, Selina! I generally don't mind over-acting when it is done in a farcical (sp?) way. Monsters in cheesy costumes and generally poor special effects are almost a Dr Who trademark. I don't think it was the execution. I do know that I disliked the silly young sacrifices. I kept thinking - DO SOMETHING! You're being led like lambs to the slaughter, you know this, your guards are completely ineffective. Why are you waiting for someone to "rescue" you. For pity sake, use some "gumption". Even when they did escape, they only acted when given orders. I had a tendency to cringe when the story dealt with them. Maybe that's the reason I seldom rewatch this episode? I'm not sure, but I know it is not re-watched frequently, in fact I usually fast-forward through it. Maybe I need to sit myself down and force myself to watch as a critic instead of a viewer to recognize the problem. As I said, I'm not quite sure why I dislike this episode so much, but it does leave a bad taste in my mouth.
